The people, the country
Italy conjures up images of incredible food and tempting wines.
There is also the much-loved convention of Passeggiata, its
scenic beauty and so much more. Expats who want to live and
work in Italy should know a few essential aspects about Italy.
Work permits for Italy
EU-citizens do not need a work permit when they want to work
in Italy. Expats from outside Europe need to apply for the work
permit before moving to Italy. Your Italian employer is responsible
for helping you to get the work permit. The provincial employment
office (Ufficio Provinciale del Lavoro e della Massima Occupazione)
is the place where to submit proof to.
Some essential documents are required for applying for the work permit card:
- Passport or official travel document
- Visa application form, must be signed by applicants in the presence of a Consular Officer
- One passport photo
- Original Work Authorization ('Autorizzazione al Lavoro') issued by the Provincial Labour Office ('Direzione Provinciale del Lavoro - Servizio Politiche del Lavoro')
All these above documents should be one original and one copy.
A Permit to Stay for Italy
Foreign nationals must apply for a Permit to Stay (Permesso di Soggiono) after they arrive in Italy.
They should go to the post office to get a "kit" and fill in the attached forms to apply for the Permit to Stay.
But this is not the same as the residency which you apply for at the city hall (commune).
You can only sign and date your kit once you receive an approval
from the postal worker in Italy. After that, you must pay €14.62
for a revenue stamp in the local tobacconists. After that, an
ID and Password will be included in a receipt.
Your Permit of Stay will arrive in the form of a digitized card.
Healthcare in Italy
Italy uses both public and private health service systems. The Italian public health service, Servizio Sanitario Nazional (SSN), offers free or low-cost service to residents.
For EU residents you can take advantage of reciprocal health agreements. For non-EU residents you should request a health card (tesserae sanitaria).
Foreign national prefer the private healthcare to public healthcare in Italy. Private healthcare in Italy is well-known for its well-trained doctors and reputable hospitals in large cities.
