About Ireland
Immigration
In Ireland, the immigration requirements are based on job offers,
skills and shortages. Citizens from the European Economic Area
do not need a working permit to start working in Ireland, contrary
to non-EEA citizens. Citizens from Bulgaria and Romania have
other requirements.
There are several ways to immigrate to Ireland:
- Green Card Permit Scheme
A Green Card Permit is a Permit for employers to a particular person which allows this person to start working in Ireland for the mentioned company.
- Work Permit Scheme
The Work Permit Scheme is used when a Green Card Permit
Scheme is not available. For example, for jobs with a salary
of 30,000 Euro or more per year.
- Intra-Company Transfer Permit Scheme
The Intra-Company Permit Scheme is used to transfer senior management, key personnel or trainees from a multinational corporation or related overseas branches to the Irish branch.
- Spouse/Dependent Permit Scheme
The Spouse/Dependent Permit Scheme is useful for Spouses and Dependents of a Work Permit holder. It allows them to apply for a working permit without any labor market need tests.
- Third Level Graduate Scheme
The Third Level Graduate Scheme allows students from outside the EEA, who have acquired their primary, masters or doctorate degree at an Irish third level educational institution, to stay in Ireland for 6 month after the receipt of their examination results.
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss member citizens need to apply for a permission to land and to remain in Ireland. In contrast to EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who don’t need those permissions, but nevertheless they require a residence card.

Working and living in Ireland
As an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen you will have the same chances to
a job offer as every other applicant. It is advisable to have
a job offer and a working permit, if needed, as well as an appropriate
accommodation in advance of your removal.
You can feel free to apply for jobs in the Irish public sector,
such as the Irish army or the Irish police force, but not the
Irish diplomatic service.
The taxes that are deducted from your salary depend on your
residential status in Ireland. The specific definition of the
taxes depends on the days you are staying in Ireland and is
written in the tax declaration. You will be a resident in Ireland
for particular taxes if:
- You are staying for 183 days or more per tax year
- You are staying 280 days or more per two tax years
Furthermore, your employer will deduct some social insurance
contributions, also known as Pay Related Social Insurance or
PRSI. That will qualify you for contributory social welfare
payments.
Finding accommodation in Ireland
Finding accommodation in Ireland is the same as in most other
countries. You can look for ads in the newspaper or take a look
on some accommodation websites. Usually rent is paid per month
in advance, and a deposit of one to two months is usually required.
The prices of Irish accommodation vary and depends on the region
where you wish to live. The prices in Dublin are very high.
